The artist

A geometric language born of two worlds

Trained in Chennai under K. C. S. Paniker and arriving in Paris in 1967 on a French government grant, Narayanan Akkitham has built a geometric abstraction drawing on tantric diagrams and Vedic thought as much as on the research of the School of Paris.

Triangles, circles, squares and calligraphic signs compose a meditation on the invisible structures of the world — a universal script between matter, energy and spirituality.

« Colour plays an essential role in this inner quest: layered in subtle veils, tones seem to radiate from the surface of the painting rather than settle upon it. »

The exhibition

Narayanan Akkitham

India now stands as the world's fifth-largest economy, and its art market is growing steadily. Against this backdrop, Galerie AB presents an exhibition dedicated to Narayanan Akkitham from October 8 to November 7, 2026.

The event is doubly singular. It sheds light on a painter who is a major figure in India — a three-time recipient of the country's highest official distinction — yet still too discreet on the French scene, even though he has lived and worked in Paris for over half a century. It also takes place at a moment when European collectors are showing growing interest in modern and contemporary Indian art.

Her view on the work

"Presenting Akkitham in Paris means returning to the city that welcomed him more than fifty years ago a painter it has never truly seen — and offering European audiences an encounter with one of contemporary India's great abstract painters."
