Born in Kerala in 1939, trained at the Government College of Fine Arts in Chennai under K.C.S. Paniker, Narayanan Akkitham arrived in Paris in 1967 on a French government scholarship. A student of Lucien Coutaud at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, he settled permanently in the French capital, developing over nearly six decades a body of work of rare formal coherence.
His art achieves a unique synthesis between the rigour of Western geometric abstraction and the spiritual symbolism of Southern Indian visual traditions. A three-time laureate of the prestigious Lalit Kala Akademi Award (1973, 1978, 1989), Narayanan Akkitham enjoys major institutional recognition in India and in international private collections.
